For children, there are both indoor and outdoor play areas. Hotel Propellen is the perfect choice, regardless of whether you are visiting Billund for business or pleasure! In the very heart of Jutland – where heather blankets the countryside in wonderfully subdued shades of purple and green – lays a truly special place. Just imagine! A hotel, right in the middle of this beautiful landscape. Surrounded by the inland dunes of Grene Sande and the moors of Randbøl Hede.
And with aircraft from all over the world at the nearby airport and laughing children at the world-famous theme park Legoland as its nearest neighbours. Yet still so peaceful, so welcoming, so delightful. This place is Hotel Propellen – and there is no doubt that both the idyllic solitude and hectic activity of its environs have helped make Propellen the enormous success it is today, perched on the edge of Randbøl moor.
PROPELLEN TAKES TO THE AIR
Initially, Propellen was a restaurant and discotheque, not a hotel. It was founded by Teddy Jensen, a traffic controller employed by SAS and a spare-time estate agent – a man with many pokers in the fire. Together with an associate, he had a wonderful idea: Billund needed a dance hall. Ideas became thoughts. Thoughts became plans. And plans finally became reality. Airborne at last – a dream come true – Propellen was launched in 1977.
PIONEERING SPIRIT AND VARIETY
Their vision was to create a place which was full of life – and they caught the mood perfectly. After just five years, it was time to expand.
The discotheque was extended and a function room added. This combination was almost unheard of in the Danish restaurant trade at the time.
The pioneering spirit was resilient though, and Propellen became the frontrunner for a whole new way of organising functions and receptions in Denmark. And even today, the dreams and visions of the founder live on. The physical surroundings encourage diversity – and celebrate variety.
Moving from room to room, it is as if you yourself become part of the story. In one corner of the restaurant, there is peace and tranquillity. In another, there is room for play. ADVERSITY FOSTERS DEVELOPMENT
Progress is easy when times are good. But it is often adversity and hardship that produce the greatest changes and foster the most innovative development. In 1985, Teddy and his wife Agnes suffered a tremendous blow when their home was destroyed by fire. Forced by circumstances, they moved into Propellen, and it was precisely this event that led to its development as a hotel. The first 20 rooms were built. The restaurant was renovated. And in no time at all, Propellen had completely changed character, becoming a truly family hotel, where the owners' presence made all the difference.
That is how it remains today. Although Propellen has changed owners long since, its past lingers on in the present.
Yet while Propellen has become a first-rate international hotel, with guests from all over the world, it has retained it's cosy Danishnes and wonderfully homely atmosphere.
The fact that many of the staff has worked here for years – several even worked for Teddy Jensen – also clearly shows that this is a great place to be.
TIMES CHANGE - AS DOES PROPELLEN
The requirements on conference facilities have also changed over the years. Nowadays, corporate guests from home and abroad demand sophisticated technical equipment and well-appointed meeting rooms.
The entire professional market is constantly changing – and Propellen constantly keeps pace. Latest addition is a completely new conference centre with seating capacity for 150 delegates, four meeting rooms, the very latest AV equipment and plenty of space for the social activities that invariably accompany a corporate function. Matter whether they are attending a conference, seminar or course, guests are thus always assured truly professional service – in a friendly and homely atmosphere. Hotel's basic philosophy is that everyone should be welcomed just as they are. And it makes no difference at all whether you visit the hotel for business or pleasure, come alone or with children. Everyone is equally welcome. Hotel Propellen is made special by the people who work here – from the maid to the waiter, from the head chef to friendly receptionist, the first smiling face you meet on arrival.
Propellen's history can therefore only be told through the lives of the people involved.

Propellen's team wants the homely atmosphere to permeate the entire hotel – including of course the kitchen and restaurant.
A meal is not simply a question of satisfying your hunger. A meal is a culinary delight for all the senses.
And that is why are preparing everything from scratch, using only the very finest and freshest ingredients the season can offer.
Chefs never compromise quality by taking shortcuts.
A meal at Propellen is a delightful combination of the tempting aromas which welcome you at the restaurant door, the subtle colour compositions of the various dishes and the wonderful flavours of the food itself.
At hotel Propellen have designed three restaurants, each with their own distinctive style, creating different settings and atmospheres and allowing guests to choose the character and style that they prefer.
Although furnished in simple café style with modern tables and chairs, this restaurant loses none of the cosy atmosphere that - together with the food - is of vital importance for a memorable eating-out-experience.
The restaurant has existed since 1977. On Friday and Saturday evenings it was incorporated into Discotheque, located at the time in the neighbouring room, Blue Skye West.
The discotheque featured a genuine cockpit, salvaged from an old Jon Viking SAS Aircraft and converted into a DJ desk.
Although the restaurant is now fully refurnished, the original wooden flooring from 1977 has been preserved and is carefully looked after.

The starting point for this restaurant's decor was a grandfather clock and chandelier, both antique and both bought at auction.
They gave the idea of creating a restaurant with palatial atmosphere. Fabrics and furnishings which could fulfil this objective were subsequently acquired.
The result is light, romantic and charming – and the team is not afraid to say that they have succeeded in creating a minimalist palatial atmosphere.
Screened-off tables allow guests to dine more privately while still sensing the company of others. The restaurant is therefore also ideal for small meetings.
Wine table is situated in Restaurant Ludwig, which is renowned for wines and offers cellar remnants at very attractive prices. Wine connoisseurs can find exceptional wines at affordable prices and make a very good buy.
Restaurant Pejsestuen has not always been a restaurant. The Danish word "pejsestue" means "living room with a fireplace". And this was originally a living room inviting you to calmness, relaxation and a brandy with your coffee.
But as the hotel was expanded with 40 rooms, it was also necessary to expand the restaurant, which lead to include this living room but still with a fireplace.
Therefore the inspiration to this room was to keep the relaxed and cosy atmosphere.
This of course meant that here should be lots of comfortable leather chairs and typical English style was ensured with lamps, dark curtains and lots of books and small items bought at flea markets.
This restaurant offers direct access to a west-facing terrace where, in the summer months, guests can enjoy an aperitif before dinner or eat al fresco if the Danish weather permits.
Restaurant Pejsestuen is reserved for adult guests.
If you are looking for even more luxury, gourmet menu offers just that – exceptional ingredients, at a slightly higher price. The menu is changed at least every second month, allowing it to be adapted to prime seasonal ingredients.
The wine cellar offers a unique opportunity to enjoy fine wine and food. The wine cellar is recommended for wine tasting events or for small groups of 12-14 people who wish to enjoy a very special experience.
The wine cellar is the most recently refurnished room. The aim was to create a cellar-like atmosphere, with arched ceilings, rustic materials and a wealth of fine wines.
The flooring originates from a century-old farmhouse on the Danish island of Funen, from where it was removed and cleaned before being re-placed here. Heavy wooden furniture and imposing candelabra add to the atmosphere – along with exquisite wines in abundance of course.
Waiters are always delighted to describe the wines on the list of "treasures". And there is certainly something to suit the tastes of any connoisseur looking for a wine experience out of the ordinary.
Because of the wines, the room is usually kept constantly cool, but the temperature is raised when guests are present.
