The sun rises early across the Southern Ocean, delivering sparkling waters and fresh, invigorating sea breezes to the morning. Start the day with a walk along the white-sanded beach, or relish the moment to relax and watch the day begin from beneath the blanket!
Breakfast is relaxed in the Restaurant, guests take a table along the windows and witness the morning unfold along the sweep of coast stretching as far as the eye can see. For breakfast, sample the intense, varied flavours of KI’s famous Ligurian Honey with toast or a pastry, fresh juice, and a kick-start KI espresso.
From the menu, guests may choose fabulous house-roasted granola with stewed fruits and KI Sheep’s yogurt, followed by a fresh free range egg omelette with chives and KI feta, or combine SA free range bacon, pork sausages, locally grown tomatoes and eggs for a well loved breakfast tradition.
“Local Essentials” such as buttermilk pancakes with local honey or sweetcorn fritters with smoked southern ocean salmon further tempt freshly woken tastebuds!
Southern Ocean Lodge Executive Chef Asher Blackford brings a passion for fresh seasonal produce as well as a drive to work with local producers to the daily-changing menu, an approach that is essential to the Baillie Lodges dining experience.
Asher is inspired by his surroundings and brings the landscape to the plate in its appearance, taste and emotion.
A keen forager, Asher conceives dishes that recreate a precise natural location and the experience or memory attached to it.
For example, he may combine King George Whiting caught fresh off the coast of American River with samphire or sea herbs foraged from the same location.
Asher’s particular food belief is around sustainability – environmental and economic – and in the local and whole food philosophy of American author Michael Pollan, with his ‘you are what you eat eats’ look at the food chain. Having a close working relationship with Kangaroo Island’s producers feeds neatly into this approach, as does a dedication to using the whole of each product, from ‘nose to tail’ or ‘root to shoot’.
Asher most recently worked as Executive Chef at Peppers Mineral Springs Retreat in Daylesford, Victoria, and before that at Emirates One&Only Wolgan Valley Resort in the New South Wales Blue Mountains. Asher’s role at Southern Ocean Lodge will be his third at a Luxury Lodges of Australia property, having also spent time in the kitchen at Lizard Island in North Queensland.
Dinner is a decadently refined menu, showcasing the riches of the Southern Ocean, premium South Australian grain-fed beef, and Kangaroo Island free-range chicken and lamb.
The daily changing menu may be a four course selection with choice, so as guests create their own epicurean adventure at each meal, or the chef’s tasting menu, a carefully crafted degustation combining the freshest seasonal flavours and leading guests on a gastronomic charter of the region’s finest local produce.
Artisan producers of sustainably produced ingredients are honoured in each menu, creating a unique experience of South Australian dining. Guests may sample a petite king crab salad, house made gnocchi accented by salty KI ‘samphire’, follow with local queen snapper or SA rolled pork shoulder and finish with a cheese selection featuring KI sheep’s milk manchego and haloumi, or with a dessert perhaps flavoured with KI lavender or the intense Ligurian honey.
All beverages, both alcoholic and non alcoholic are included in the rates at Southern Ocean Lodge and a select cellarmasters list of vintage SA wines and French Champagnes is additional.
In keeping with the Lodge commitment to featuring local produce an excellent range of diverse Kangaroo Island and South Australian wines and beers has been hand selected to comprise the beverage menu.
The Lodge is designed to encourage a relaxed ‘holiday house’ feel. Guests may help themselves to a drink from their in-suite bar, or from the bar in the Great Room to relax and enjoy with the view, a book or perhaps share with a mate.
There’s always a Southern Ocean Lodge team member on hand to assist with mixing a cocktail or assist in selecting and serving the drink perfect for the moment.
Sunset drinks served each evening either at the Lodge or in the field provide a wonderful opportunity for guests to get to know both the SOL team and the other guests, to share their day’s experiences and to plan the day ahead.
Selected wines are served with lunch and dinner. If guests prefer to choose their own, they can explore the walk-in cellar and bring their bottle to the table.
After a morning filled with walks and wildlife, or simply spent relaxing with a book or with a treatment in the spa, appetites are up for lunch. The three course menu offers a selection of seasonal treats and is deceptively light, a perfectly planned ‘elegant sufficiency’.
If the weather is fine and warm, guests can enjoy an alfresco lunch on the terrace in the sunshine; in cooler, moodier weather, it’s more fun to watch from inside!
Lunch might include a locally farmed salad, KI marron or King George Whiting, a risotto flavoured with local mushrooms and herbs or an SA steak sandwich. Relax with a glass of South Australian wine, a cool beer or the purest KI rainwater and finish with a select cheese plate, or affogato to fuel the afternoon.
