Gorakadan stands on grounds where once the villa of The Former Kaninnomiya Family stood. It is located in the heart of Gorakadan spa amid the rich green forest of the national park.

In 1930, Imperial Prince Kaninnomiya Kotohito, who resided at Nagata-cho (currently an official residence of the President of the House of Councilors) in Tokyo, acquired the land in Gora in Hakone, belonging to Yasumi Iwasaki and built his summer villa.
The Imperial Prince Kaninnomiya Haruhito became the head of the family and after WWII, he abdicated from the Imperial family and left the land to the founder of Gorakadan.
After full refurbishment, the current form of Gorakadan was born in 1989.
In 1991, the hotel was acclaimed for excellence by the globally renowned hotels & restaurants group "Relais & Châteaux" and it is highly praised by both domestic and oversea guests.
Amid Hakone Izu national park, Gora Spa flourished in the Meiji and Taisho periods as a resort among politicians and aristocrats alike and the rich spring water is relished to this day.
