The Paso Robles Wine Region or AVA (American Viticultural Area) is only the sixth AVA in the United States. It was established in the 1970s, and has been expanded twice (1997 & 2009) since then. It is the fastest growing wine region and the largest geographic appellation in California, covering 614,000 acres, with more than 26,000 planted vineyard acres.
Positioned just 6 miles inland from the Pacific Ocean, the terroir is extremely diverse.
The Paso Robles AVA experiences bigger, daily temperature swings than any other AVA in California. Possessing both a long growing season, and a prevalence of highly coveted calcareous soils, the Paso Robles AVA offers the ideal growing conditions for producing premium and ultra- premium wines. The region is well known for its heritage varietal Zinfandel, as well as Bordeaux and Rhône varietals..
There are currently more than 200 wineries in the Paso Robles AVA. Paso Robles is divided by Hwy 101, resulting in two distinct regions: the East Side and the West Side. The East Side is predominately flat, hot, and dry, while the West Side consists of higher elevations, more rainfall and frequent morning fog.
With such an abundance of wineries, trying to visit each and every one could prove overwhelming, but as luck would have it, there are a number of annual wine events in which to immerse yourself:
Hotel Cheval’s wine, beer & champagne bar the Pony Club, is located just off the hotel lobby. The Pony Club continues the hotel’s understated equestrian theme with a traditional French zinc-topped, horseshoe-shaped bar, as black & white photos of local riders adorn the walls.
Serving premium Central California and select European Wines, appetizers and small plates, the Pony Club is the perfect spot to rub elbows with the locals, listen to some live music, and enjoy some fine wines.
