The La Semilla brand story is, at its core, a love story. The owners met many years ago while working in hospitality in New York City and it was love at first sight. From the beginning of their relationship, they dreamed of owning a hotel one day — a little property near the water.
During the couple’s journeys around the world together, they would always file away details they admired of places they visited: souvenirs, photographs, and journals filled with notes. Many years after leaving New York, she, being Mexican herself, developed a strong desire to return home and without much trouble convinced her couple to move their growing family to Riviera Maya.
They both continued working in hotels after the move until one day he knew the time had come to take a risk and begin to fulfill their dreams of becoming hoteliers themselves.
Then, in 2013, their dreams came to fruition with the opening on Hotel La Semilla in Playa del Carmen. The Hotel is a magical place filled with the love and care the owners put into running it. It is not uncommon for the owner to be found during breakfast connecting with guests, engaging in lively discussions about local culture or helping plan itinerates.
The property soon became a refuge for stylish travellers looking for a personal and romantic jumping-off-point for relaxing and exploring the Yucatan Peninsula.
They quickly began brainstorming ways to better serve their independent guests while offering something completely unique and private. The result? Villa La Semilla, a secret villa quietly nestled on the beach at Soliman Bay.
Soliman Bay offers “off-the-radar,” pristine beaches near Tulum and a place that the couple hold dear to their hearts. It is a place where one can completely disconnect from the daily routine and reconnect with nature and loved ones.
The villa offers a complimentary experience to Hotel La Semilla where guests can relish in the privacy of an exclusive home with all the amenities of a boutique hotel.
Hotel La Semilla is a nine-room bed and breakfast with a laid-back atmosphere. The organic forms and simple design reflect a sense of Mexican history, heritage, style and simplicity inspired by the Rough Lux movement. Design is dedicated to the authentic and the unpretentious, reversing the past from the youthful perspective of the present.
Hotel's team define Rough Lux as embracing the imperfection created by the wear and tear of time.
Suite Terraza is the unique suite in Hotel La Semilla and most luxurious. The space offers panoramic views and a private terrace with outdoor bath or shower. Inside, calm colors and a spacious sitting area is the ideal place to lounge after a long day of sun.
After which, you can roll onto your King-size bed and draw the curtains to enjoy the silence and coziness of this chic space.
Live in harmonious balance with nature in the Cuartos Terraza room. Here you’ll discover a Queen-size bed and hip outdoor seating area on your own private terrace. The terrace looks out over garden and peeks into the Maya jungle beyond hotel;s property.
It is the ideal place to observe the quietness of this green space and relish in the faint sounds of the jungle creatures and wind through the palms.
The second room category offers a larger space than the Cuartitos and a King-size bed. The design continues to play a very important role as this room category includes small seating areas and living spaces that are unique to each individual space.
This room-type is perfect for guests that like to stretch their legs or spend lazy mornings reading quietly while enjoying the cool breeze and soft hum of life outside. The room measures 23m2.
Hotel's team affectionately call these rooms “small with a big personality.” They feature a Queen-size bed and an unpretentious, laid-back design aesthetic in line with the Rough Lux movement.
The result is undeniably romantic utilizing soft shades of cream and tan alongside mixed vintage pieces that give a unique personality to each space. The room measures 20m2.
In order for you to feel like your are at a friend’s house hotel's team has carefully placed coffee tables, sofas and comfy chairs through the breakfast bar to create the ideal place to mingle in a home-style living environment.

Garden terrace is filled with palm trees, vegetation and happy little black birds that take baths in the fountain. Among the foliage you can find a grand Copal tree. The Mayan people valued highly the Copal tree and its resin as sacred incense.
This incense was used in all their mystical ceremonies and sacred rituals and hotel's team believe the presence of this sacred tree gives a unique energy to the garden.
This lovely, laid-back, quiet space is for hotel guests only and promises long hours of sunbathing or a stimulating shower experience to cool off after a long day of exploring or playing at the beach.

Food in Mexico is a serious subject. Not only are home grown chefs beginning to garner more and more acclaim each year, but the tradition of Mexican food and it’s significance to the culture is so strong, that UNESCO donned Mexican food as a Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2012.
Playa del Carmen is a place where local Mexicans eat, work and live. It is an incredibly vibrant place that has a bad reputation for being a crazy party destination.
Tulum may need no introduction, as it is the epicenter of the hip, bohemian-luxe movement in Mexico. Practically an institution for Manhattanites, this quaint town has made quite a splash among the cultural elite.
