The Balmoral began life as a grand railway hotel and continues to respect the traditions set by its founders, right down to the kilted doormen.
HISTORY
Opened on October 15th 1902, hotel was originally known as the North British. Acclaimed as one of the great railway hotels, it originally boasted 300 bedrooms and 52 bathrooms.
It was later renamed The Balmoral — which means “majestic dwelling” in Gaelic.

One of the most spacious suites, the newly refurbished Glamis Suite is classic yet contemporary.
The sitting room overlooks Princes Street. It has a working fireplace and dining table for four.
The Balmoral Suite has a sitting room with a living flame fire and a separate dining room for six.
The suite has a guest powder room as well as a walk-in wardrobe in the master bedroom.
The J.K. Rowling suite features a beautiful sitting room with turret style alcoves and decor inspired by the Scottish woodlands. This suite has view over Calton Hill. This suite is where the J.K.Rowling finished Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows.
It contains a marble bust of Hermes, the Greek god of travel, signed by J.K.Rowling herself. The door knocker is a brass owl in her honour.
Four of the Grand Suites have turret-style alcoves. Each has a name synonymous with Scotland — Braemar, Stirling, Dunrobin, Tay and JK Rowling.
The latter is where the author finished her final Harry Potter book, The Deathly Hallows.
It contains her writing desk and a marble bust of Hermes, the Greek god of travel, signed by Rowling herself.
The door knocker is a brass owl in her honour.

Each suite is named after a Scottish river or castle — Rothesay, Dee, Drummond, Brodick, Bothwell and Spey.
