The original Town Hall opened in 1910 - the heyday of Edwardian Architecture and British Power.
The building reflected a new confidence and wealth in the Borough and the Council spent lavishly on fine architects, craftsmen and artists to decorate it.
More building was commissioned in the 1930s and this splendid addition contains the Art-Deco interiors which have made Town Hall Hotel a famous film location.
Pevsener, the Architectural Bible of Britain, called the internal decoration ‘subtle but expensive Deco style’.
Australian walnut wood was used to panel the Council Chamber, mahogany in the mayoral office, green and white marble lined the staircase, while even the air vents were covered with exquisitely patterned brass grilles.
Town Hall Hotel marries Edwardian, Art-Deco and now the most cutting-edge modern architecture in one harmonious whole.
The design has drawn plaudits from English Heritage and won accolades within the industry.
Town Hall Hotel won the prestigious RICS London award for Building Conservation, as well as the national Project of the Year Award, reflecting the exceptional concentration that was put into restoration and preservation as well as imaginative reinvention.
Using techniques never before seen in Britain, including a patterned metal veil, laser-cut with a design inspired by the Art-deco Council Chamber, every room is flooded with natural light, while original features have been painstakingly restored.
Architects, furniture designers, artists and craftsmen have been involved at every step of the way to create a truly stunning interior.
Every room and suite has been individually designed. Many retain grand Edwardian period features, others have an up-in-the-eaves-loft-style chic - all are exceptionally spacious, feeling more like pied a terre in the city than a traditional hotel room.
Each room contains one-off vintage pieces of furniture and is made deliciously inviting with sheepskin rugs by the bed, barista-quality coffee and luxury toiletries.
There are all the conveniences you would expect, including free wi-fi and entertainment centre, plus a few you might not - enjoying the company of goldfish for the night, unlimited mineral water in your room or free shuttle bus services to Liverpool Street and Bank each weekday morning.
The flagship suite at Town Hall Hotel has a breath-taking design. Even those used to five-star suites around the world, gasp at first sight. The suite has hosted several celebrity guests, as well as private parties for those who want a uniquely spectacular setting.
Soaring triple-height ceilings stretch high above, while light floods through huge arched windows, splashed with colour from stained-glass panels.
At one end of the suite, stand two plaster statues made by the famous sculptor, Henry Poole: Truth holds a mirror, while Happiness carries a comic mask and wine cup.
In such a grand setting, it would be a crime to divide up the space and so a series of architect-designed glass partitions and a brilliant use of lighting preserve the glorious interior, while also creating the necessary privacy for a bedroom, two bathrooms, dining for up to 20, a sitting area and study.
The state of the art kitchen has been furnished to professional standards.
In-house Chefs can create exceptional menus, served just for you and your guests, as the ultimate in private dining
