HISTORY
What led the hotelier Josef Anton Bon from Ragaz to choose Vitznau for his luxury hotel?
In an idyllic setting on the shores of Lake Lucerne, not far from the legendary Rütli meadow, the location seemed perfect to this forward thinking entrepreneur.
Not least because Vitznau had been attracting the emerging mass tourism market since the opening of the Vitznau-Rigi Railway, Europe’s first cogwheel railway, in 1871.
Bon must have recognised that in this golden age of tourism, a modern luxury hotel on the lake shore was just what was needed.
In the architect Karl Gottlieb Koller, who also came from Ragaz, he found a great master of his craft.
Koller had already built such famous establishments as the Bäderhotel in Bormio (Veltlin) and the Hotel Schweizerhof in St. Moritz; later he was to go on to create the stunning Hotel Suvretta House in St. Moritz and Hotel Columbia in Genoa.
In spring 1903, after around three years of building work, the Park Hotel was opened, with the former Pension Pfyffer, built in 1867, integrated into the new hotel.
Alongside prominent figures from business and industry, guests at the Park Hotel also numbered artists and actors from home and abroad.
In celebration of the hundred year jubilee, a series of glamorous and spectacular ball nights were held, just as in 1903. In spring 2009, the hotel was taken over by Park Hotel Vitznau AG and closed in order to carry out the planned renovations.

Born around 1500, Bartolomeo Scappi was one of the most famous chefs of the Renaissance; at the age of 30, he entered the service of Pope Paul III, producing culinary delights for Pope Paul as well as 3 subsequent popes.
In 1536, Bartolomeo Scappi had the honour of preparing a 13
course menu with a total of 789 elaborate dishes for Emperor Charles V, who was staying as a guest of the Grimani family.
In 1577 he died and was buried on the cemetery of the church Santi Vincenzo e Anastasio alla Regola, which was specialy reserved for chefs.
Old world wines are those produced in regions and countries where the winegrowing tradition has been practised and enjoyed over many centuries.
Old world countries include, amongst others, Italy, Spain, Portugal, France, Germany, Austria and Switzerland.
Six hundred years of architectural history are united in this palace built on the former defence walls of the imperial city of Vienna; a former residence of the House of Coburg-Gotha, the
palace’s impressive ceremonial rooms still shine in their former glory, whilst this luxury hotel enthrals and delights lovers of fine wine and food time and time again.
The French wine growing area of Bordeaux, also known as the Bordelais, is the largest in the world for prestigious wines; 3,000 châteaux, amongst them Château Mouton, Château Petrus and Château D’Yquem, produce noble wines enjoyed the world over.
Wines which reflect the sun, the region and the passion of the wine growers.
In 1720, the South Sea Company bubble peaked, as the rumour spread that the South Sea Company had negotiated a monopoly on trading to South America - a rumour which immediately stirred hope of great riches and pushed the value of the company stock up to dizzy heights.
In reality, little or no trading took place and 8 months later, the bubble burst, leaving many investors, amongst them Sir Isaac Newton (out of pocket by £20,000, in present day terms around £2,500,000), horrendously in debt.
Inspired by the Park Hotel Vitznau’s Gourmet Restaurant, the intricate, unusual and precise details in this room reflect the skill
and craftsmanship of Head Chef Nenad Mlinarevic and his cuisine.
The origins of the Vienna Boys Choir date back to 1498, when Emperor Maximilian I chose to have 6 boys sing at his court; 520 years later, the Vienna Boys Choir has around 100 active members, divided into four concert choirs sharing the tours, service in the Hofburgkapelle, concerts and performances.
The choirs are named after four composers, who are all closely connected with the history of the Vienna Boys Choir - Anton Bruckner, Joseph Haydn, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and Franz Schubert.
Winner investors such as Warren Buffet, George Soros and Benjamin Graham set themselves apart though their profound knowledge, their decision-making abilities and the conviction of their actions.
Just like the courageous and successful investors in the cogwheel railway.
In 1871, the Vitznau-Rigi Railway began as the first mountain railway in Europe.
This railway is considered an engineering wonder to this day.
Joseph A. Schumpeter (1883-1950) saw the economy as a waveform of crises and fresh beginnings; he elucidated this theory with a model of "creative destruction".
His concept can be visualised using nature as an example.
In 1601, an earthquake caused a huge Tsunami in Lake Lucerne,
completely destroying the surrounding lake shores with a 4 metre high wave.
In spite of this catastrophe, the region has developed over the centuries into a much loved and economically thriving tourist destination.
One of the most famous vineyards in the world, the Château D’Yquem is particularly renowned for its sweet wines produced in the Sauternes area of the French region of Bordeaux.
For centuries owned by the Lur Saluces family, descended from a "lovechild" of the Sun King of Versailles, the vineyard’s methods differ in many ways from conventional wine production.
Only truly ripe grapes are picked, but the same vine may be harvested up to 10 times in one year.
If the juice then produced from the grapes fails to reach the quality required, then no sweet wine is produced in that year.
Established by the Swedish inventor and industrialist, Alfred Noble (1833-1896), the Nobel Prize has been awarded annually to people and organisations since 1901; the prizes are awarded to people from the fields of physics, chemistry, physiology or medicine, and literature, and also for efforts towards peace.
The prizes are considered to be the most prestigious awards that can be received and are presented each year on 10th December, the day on which Alfred Nobel died.
WU stands for Vienna University; the University of Economics and Business of today was founded in 1989 as an "Imperial Export Academy" and is now rated as one of Europe’s leading universities.
In 2003, together with the ZZ Vermogensverwaltung, the university set up an Institute for Strategic Financial Studies, enabling students to further deepen their knowledge under real conditions.
The world famous Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra has been going for over 170 years and is quite rightly called the most prestigious orchestra in the world.
The orchestra's close association with the rich musical history is best illustrated by the statements of countless pre-eminent musical personalities of the past.
Richard Wagner described the orchestra as being one of the most outstanding in the world; Anton Bruckner called it "the most superior musical association" and Johannes Brahms counted himself as a "friend and admirer".
The French chef Georges Auguste Escoffier, born in 1846 in Villeneuve-Loubet, is considered to be the definitive French Master Chef.
With his book, "Guide Culinaire", he achieved not only world
fame, but also introduced the world to French haute cuisine.
Signature dishes such as Homard à l’americaine or Pêche Melba are still served today all over the world.
The Vienna Kammerspiele Theatre was built in 1910 by the architects Schweinburger and Schwadron.
In 1925, under the direction of Ludwig Korner, the Kammerspiele became the second stage for the Josefstadt Theatre and has remained so, with the exception of few years, ever since.
The management, ensemble and legal entity are all part of the Josefstadt theatre.
Theatre is a form of expression and of stories that are told.
In 1788, the first stage of the later Josefstadt Theatre was set up in the garden of the inn "Bey den goldenen Straussen" at Josefstädter Strasse 26, in an attempt to bring in more revenue; this resulted in the Josefstadt Theatre.
The inn was later demolished and replaced with a newer, larger building in Biedermeier style; today, the Josefstadt is more than simply a Viennese theatre - it is also an Austrian institution.
In investment psychology, irrational actions such as greed and panic are widespread and are, as such, called "behavioural economics".
People tend, as a reaction to danger, to try to save their money by
selling as quickly as possible, or to trust and invest blindly, in the hope that the value will increase.
In such cases, it is better to stick to the rule of thumb rather than to make complex judgements.

This suites have a separated living- and bedroom, granite bathroom, guest toilet and a balcony or terrace.
According to accounts, Guillaume Tirel, born in 1310 and also known as Taillevent, worked from an early age in the kitchens of the then queen; his book ''Le Viandier'', written when he was 30, is thought to have been the first book ever written by a chef on cuisine and gastronomy.
This book remains today an important source of reference in modern French cuisine.
With the second largest endowment capital after Harvard, the almost 300 year old American university of Yale has dedicated itself for as long as can be remembered to endowment management.
Using its own approach, the university also uses alternative investment strategies; nes which, for example, take resources such as the forests into consideration.
Born in 1946, R.J. Schiller investigated the link between fluctuations in dividend and share prices by analysing excessive and fundamentally unjustified price movements on the stock market.
He defined the excessive volatility found though this analysis as "excess volatility" (the range of variation of a base value).
Regarded as one of the most successful endowment managers in the world, David F. Swensen has held a range of advisory positions, including at the New York Stock Exchange; in 2008, he was made a fellow of the American Academy of Arts &
Sciences and is also Chief Investment Officer at Yale University, where he invented the "Yale Model", dedicated to long-term profit orientation and diversification, and to generating alpha.

In contrast to old world wines, new world wines continue to surprise with new varieties of grapes, new flavours and new methods of production.
Such as wines from the Australian continent, where the delicate
touch of acacia ensures a sophisticated and unique taste, and clearly recognisable wines.
New world wines are those from South Africa, Australia, New Zealand and South America.
The renowned economist Baron John Maynard Keynes was made bursar of King’s College in 1924.
With his pioneering spirit he set a new course in investment and turned a previously rather conservative tradition of investing around, with the remarkable achievement of quadrupling the value of the endowment.
Even more remarkably, this was achieved through commodities and shares during 20 years of economic depression.
Endowments - the sustainable growth of wealth in favor of promotion, science and business.
Stanford University is not only one of the most successful endowment universities, but is also the most renowned research centre for IT and new technologies.
Stanford is also home to original Arpanet nodes (later the World Wide Web), as well as to a huge network of graduates and developers.
William F. Sharpe developed the performance measurement ratio known as the Sharpe Ratio, which measures a risk versus reward ratio when investing capital.
As a result, W. Sharpe was awarded with the Nobel Prize for science in 1990; capital formation and value creation - these are the basics of finance.
The Vienna Children’s Theatre, founded in 1994 by Sylvia Rotter, is the only theatre in Vienna to just have children on the stage; the children learn in a fun fashion how to express
themselves through movement and words, as well as how to memorise their texts in order to give their best at the annual theatrical production.
No matter which corner of the world they have travelled from, artists will find a special retreat in the classic interior design of the Artist Suite.
Value investors think carefully about the value of their investments, taking into account not only the current value of the securities, but also their intrinsic value, thus ensuring long term returns on their money.

decided to take systematic risks to achieve high returns and profits, in turn putting these into the state pension funds, ensuring the wellbeing of future generations of Norwegians.

The characters in his paintings are often portrayed as mythical creatures, inspiring the viewer to create his own thoughts.
In art circles, he is known as the undisputed master of visionary art of the time.
Interest and compound interest provide the basis for the financial market in today’s economy.
It is important to know that capital gain is minimal at the start but that it increases dramatically after only a few years (for example, capital doubles in only 10 years with an interest rate of 7%).
R-strategies (rate strategies) are also called growth strategies and use the financial market.
