HISTORY
The hotel is filled with age-old memories of the culture of Asolo and the distinguished charm imbued in the place by the great Eleonora Duse during her stays.
In the 1920s, Eleonora Duse chose to live in the hotel while the villa that she bought in Asolo was being renovated. Room 202 has been dedicated to her and it has been faithfully restored and furnished in the style of the period when she stayed here.
The authentic reservation letters that Eleonora Duse sent to the previous owners of the hotel are still among prized possessions today and they underline the illustrious history of the Albergo al Sole.
The hotel was run by two sisters whose marvellous hosting ability made the Albergo Al Sole a focal point in Asolo.
At the time, the restaurant was the main gathering place for the people of Asolo on Sundays and it also served as the venue for lunches and small ceremonies for the local clientele.
As fate would have it, 50 years later the sisters Silvia and Elena De Checchi were able to revive the tradition of hospitality on the square in the enchanting medieval town of Asolo.
The historical building on the square in Asolo was brought back to life and given original appearance once again thanks to a masterful restoration programme that began in 1992 and was completed in 1996.
One particularly noteworthy aspect was the discovery of the 16th century Bacchus Grotto, which takes name from the depiction of a man with a wine flask in his hand on the arched ceiling. Thanks to the immaculate restoration work on the fresco, it is still perfectly intact.
In 1996, the sisters began running the hotel, despite the fact that they had no previous experience in the field.
Their father Vittorino De Checchi was an entrepreneur in the brick industry who bought and restored the historical Albergo al Sole building, which had been closed and disused for more than 25 years.
The restoration process lasted five years and Silvia and Elena oversaw the final stages themselves, working alongside the architect on the selection of furnishings and fabrics.
They both instantly fell in love with the business and became very passionate about it. They very simply followed the rules of hospitality as they embarked on their new venture.
Silvia mainly deals with the accommodation and marketing side of things. Elena inherited her mother Rosanna’s fondness for fine cuisine, so she runs the prestigious, renowned “La Terrazza” restaurant.
She is a constant presence in the dining area and she can count on a young, talented team in the kitchen
Silvia and Elena have honed their management skills and made the hotel into one of the most exceptional establishments of kind in the region. In 2011 it was awarded a five-star rating and joined the select, prestigious band of Small Luxury Hotels of The World.
