HISTORY
Hotel was designed in the early 19th century by the great architect Giuseppe Valadier, who redeveloped the neighbouring Piazza del Popolo.
During eventful history, the building has played many parts. At one point it was the head office for the leading Italian television channel.
PABLO AND JEAN
Artist Pablo Picasso and poet Jean Cocteau stayed at hotel in February 1917 when preparing to stage the first ever Cubist ballet. The friends occupied adjoining rooms and leaned out of the windows to pick oranges from the garden.
SECRET GARDEN
The Secret Garden, also designed by Valadier, has 2,800 square metres of terraced gardens, full of palm trees, yews and white climbing roses.

Pablo Picasso stayed at Hotel de Russie for three months in 1917, in what is now the Picasso Suite. It has just refurbished to create a modern residence in the centre of Rome.
Inspired by his signature style, the suite is decorated in cheerful yellow and purple tones, lithographs and Picasso folio books, handcrafted tapestry cushions with Portrait De Dora Maar and other popular works, as well as Italian furniture and fabrics.
Located on the top floor, the suite overlooks the vibrant green Secret Garden and the slopes of the Pincio.
The dining area has a marble table for six diners, a bar alcove and a library with a work desk; there’s also a walk-in his-and-hers wardrobe. The terrace is designed to provide an intimate al fresco space, with a double sofa and coffee table, a lounger and a dining table for four.
Fifth-floor Vaselli Suite has a furnished private terrace which overlooks Secret Garden. It has generous wardrobe space, a separate sitting room and can be interconnected to form a two-bedroom suite.
