La Posta Vecchia is the perfect place to start your Roman holiday. La Posta Vecchia is a villa built in the 17th century that used to be part of ancient Alsium, a port city, originally Etruscan but later Roman, which was covered over in subsequent centuries by new buildings, like Castello Odescalchi and its outbuilding of the castle, owned by the Orsini family, one of the oldest families in Rome. Following its sale in 1693, and a devastating fire in 1918, the American billionaire J. Paul Getty purchased the property in the 1960s, transforming it into his seaside home.
For several decades, it was the home of J. Paul Getty, who, alongside art historian Federico Zeri, decorated it with unique furnishings from the 15th and 17th centuries and precious artwork from around the world. The villa’s recent history began in the 1980s,
when the private home was purchased by the Sciò family, who used it as their private residence until 1989. In 1990, Roberto Sciò returned it to its original function of hospitality.
ANCIENT ORIGINS
La Posta Vecchia is located on what was the ancient town of Alsium. Originally an Etruscan port, the town was taken over by the Romans, becoming a favourite resort for the wealthy, before falling into decline. During Getty’s restoration work, two Roman villas dating to the 2nd century BC were discovered at La Posta Vecchia. The priceless remains of the excavations are now on display in the hotel’s private museum.
La Posta Vecchia offers accommodation like no other. With spectacular sea or garden views, each suite and room has a unique character shaped by its individual history.
The heritage furniture, luxury fittings and sumptuous fabrics will envelop you in a timeless space that breathes the past, whichever room you choose.
The Master Getty Suite boasts spectacular views over the emerald Tyrrhenian sea from its unique wall of windows. While away the hours in the comfort of your luxury suite and let the panoramic views transport you to a world of timeless glamour.
The Getty Suite was J.P. Getty’s private wing when he resided in the Villa. It boasts 16th and 17th century furniture, an oak-wood ceiling, King-size bed, white marble bathroom and a wall of windows overlooking the sea.
The Medici Suite was Mr. Getty’s companion’s suite. The Spanish 17th century King-size bed belonged to the Medici family, and
pink marble tub embraced by two marble stairways highlight the outstanding luxury which is the hallmark of the Villa.
The three Senior Suites offer enchanting views over the lush Italian Garden or overlooks the sea, where fisherman can be spotted diving for squid during the summer months. Precious artefacts from yesteryear and the period marbles in the bathroom provide a taste of the glamour that pervades the entire hotel.

A sequence of mirrors in the other room creates an old fashion atmosphere, a revival of Getty’s taste.
