The ‘home suite home’, Reykjavik Marina Residence, opened in fall 2015. The focus is on exclusive private service, high-class comfort and décor.
The residence is located just next to Reykjavik Marina’s main building in two renovated historic Reykjavik houses. The lounge and the main suite Aðalbjörg (60 m2) is located in Daniel’s House, a former residence of the shipbuilder Daniel Thorsteinsson. Six more exclusive rooms (40 m2), are located in the next door house.
New facilities at Icelandair Hotel Reykjavík Marina have further enhanced the hotel’s lively atmosphere that guests love so much. The hotel was expanded with new beautiful rooms and suites, delightful common areas on the ground floor, a new vibrant café called Kaffislippur, as well as jewel, the exclusive Reykjavik Marina Residence.
Just like other rooms at the hotel, the 39 new elegant rooms - taken in use in summer 2015 - are decorated with contemporary Icelandic design and references to maritime culture.
The rooms are on four floors and of various types. The new common area will have facilities for events with up to 50 guests and another space for 25–30 people, well suited for all kinds of promotions or private parties.
Icelandic design is becoming more and more renowned internationally. It is young and vibrant and very much on the rise whether it is graphic design, architecture, fashion or industrial and product design. Various design studios and shops that sell Icelandic design products are situated close to the hotel.
Hotel's team puts great effort into interior design. They wanted to be both colorful and fun and connect to the history of the building and location by the harbour. Everything in the hotel is designed and produced in Iceland.
EMBROIDERY
Embroidery and other types of handicraft are a very old tradition in Iceland. Knitting has always been a popular past time as proven by the immense popularity of the traditional Icelandic wool sweater. After the economic crisis in 2008 it seemed like everybody went back to basics and started knitting and embroidering. In the blink of an eye the clean shaven male population in Prada became a bearded one in wool sweaters.
At Reykjavik Marina is used old embroidery for decorations and in a few hotel rooms there are embroidered stools with unfinished needlework. Guests are invited to take part and leave their mark.
THE PHOTOS
As an island, Iceland is defined by the sea. It is one of the main sources of food and income for the nation; the smell from the fish smelters used to be called "the smell of money". The sea gives and the sea takes, it was said, as fishermen went out in small boats and many didn't return. It used to be both a highway to other countries and the biggest barrier to travel.
The photographs in the hotel showing harbour life are shown with courtesy of the Reykjavik Museum of Photography, which is located close to the hotel.
