After it was opened in 1690 by Mr François Laurent, the Café Laurent became a hotspot of literary and artistic life in Paris, where Fontenelle, Houdar de La Motte, Rousseau, Voltaire, and many more, used to rub shoulders.
Indeed, scholars, the philosophers and writers of the "Encyclopédie", enjoyed meeting up around a new drink: "Eau de Café". Montesquieu referred to it in these terms: "At the Café Laurent, coffee gives great spirit to those who drink it." It was also possible to sample tea from India, lemonade, chocolate chips and citrus fruit. The "Incorruptible" Robespierre particularly enjoyed this new fruit, which was said to lighten the complexion. In 1946, the establishment became the Café Tabou, the meeting place for some of the most famous intellectuals of the post-war years. More than any other place, it is a symbol of the history of Saint-Germain-des-Prés at that time.
Despite being a simple neighbourhood bistrot, in 1945, it was awarded the authorisation to remain open all night long. This was justified by the presence of the Messageries de Presse in the neighbouring building, which had people working 24 hours a day.
From 1946 onwards, Sartre, Camus, Simone de Beauvoir and Queneau were used to meeting there in the evenings in the company of writers, intellectuals and other night owls.
The following year, the café was extended into the basements where, today, the seminar room can be found.
It was in this cellar that young people from the neighbourhood met, accompanied by the sounds of the Claude Abadie's jazz band, the trumpet player of which was none other than a certain Boris Vian.
Those who regularly visited the venue include Anne-Marie Cazalis, Juliette Gréco, who started her singing career here, and, above all, Boris Vian, whose personality gradually became even more famous than his musical prowess.
Famous for some as one of the main venues for intellectual life in Saint-Germain-des-Prés, subject to public scorn by the conservative press which could only see it as a den of vice, the Tabou quickly became a victim of its success.
Too many people went there and, in 1948, the club's small group of founders moved to another venue: the Club Saint-Germain-des-Prés on Rue Saint-Benoît.
Despite this massive and symbolic defection, the Tabou continued to be a very popular venue and one of the temples of jazz in Paris.
As for singers, they took refuge at La Rose Rouge, which was opened nearby by Niko Papatakis. Later, this venue played host to other celebrities, such as Martine Carol or Marcel Mouloudji. Brigitte Bardot used to dance there all night long.
For more than 40 years, the Tabou was the centre of night-life in Saint-Germain-des-Prés.
Today, the Café Laurent chose to return to its original name whilst also perpetuating the venue's musical tradition. In the afternoon, it is time for tea and private relaxing moments, whereas, in the evening, the café becomes a piano bar and jazz invades the venue. Discover the programme for evenings.
If jazz is a major part of the identity of Saint-Germain-des-Prés, it is also a major part of life at the Café Laurent. A veritable institution in Saint-Germain-des-Prés, this piano bar in Paris is located in the Hôtel d’Aubusson and regularly hosts concerts and events.
A centre for philosophy and jazz, Saint-Germain-des-Prés became a temple for recovery after the Second World War. At the Tabou, the former name of Café Laurent, Anne-Marie Cazalis met Boris Vian, Abadie, and Gréco, Queneau, Mauriac, Sartre and many other hipsters during evenings where jazz, existentialism and a certain joie de vivre took pride of place.
Today, the Café Laurent, although it has returned to its original name, perpetuates this tradition so closely linked to the neighbourhood's history.
From Wednesday evening to Saturday evening, pianists, groups and singers take turns on the stage in piano bar.
In this mythical venue in Saint-Germain-des-Prés which, in 1947, stayed open throughout the night, jazz evenings continue to chime out their notes and rhythms, no longer in the formerly packed cellars, but in a lounge offering a cosy atmosphere.
Although jazz concerts are programmed four evenings a week (Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday), the rest of the time, pianists are occasionally invited to provide entertainment for evening events; and other aspiring musicians are also welcome to try their hand at the piano.
