The Goldener Hirsch Hotel has had an excellent reputation for hosting guests from all over the world since it was built in 1407, and is considered to be the inventor of catering outside the hotel, as the first provider of such a service in Austria. It has distinguished itself through more than 600 years of history and
a love of tradition. Genuine sterling silver cutlery embossed with the hotel's stag logo, original table linens also embellished with a stag design as well as the hotel's own porcelain crockery, are sure to make any event a magical experience.
Looking out toward Herbert von Karajan Square and Festival Hall are the doors of Restaurant Goldener Hirsch. What was once a ferrier’s shop—where locals brought their horses to be shoed—has become Salzburg’s most illustrious restaurant, favored by government officials, world-class performers, and members of the international social set.
The simply sophisticated dining room pays homage to its humble ancestry with rustic Austrian wooden chairs and tables that harmonize with the wooden beams that cross the ceiling.
Pronounced arches and white walls are decorated with engravings of hunting scenes that recall an era of grandeur. Austrian green is featured in the traditional waiter uniforms and table linens. Hand woven in white and green, they feature the hotel’s signature stag motif.
Be sure to note the table next to the old fireplace. Named the Grilltisch, it has been there since the restaurant opened, and is the spot where architect Clemens Holzmeister was chosen to design the Festival Hall. The most sought-after table in the restaurant, however, is the Karajan Table, the famous composer Herbert von Karajan’s regular spot.
Chef Martin Bednarik has created an incomparable combination of traditional Salzburg specialties accompanied by new international dishes. Over the years, the restaurant has earned many Toque Awards.
The perfect accompaniment to any meal is a bottle of wine from our extensive cellar, which boasts a cultured selection of the best Austrian and worldwide vintages.

Leonard Bernstein, Herbert von Karajan, Helmut Luhner, and actor Curt Jurgens are among them.
In 1767, the restaurant was a goldsmith shop. Today, guests enter from Karajanplatz into a folkloristic, creative atmosphere evocative of eras past. Waitresses wear dirndls to emphasize the traditional Austrian ambience.
Dark wood tables and chairs populate the rooms while golden light from scattered lamps cast romance. Fine table linens serve as a simple background for authentic Salzburg cuisine.
