Tierra Atacama Hotel and Spa is built on the site of the old cattle corral, where the drovers who brought cattle from Argentina to the Port of Antofagasta stopped to feed and rest their animals after the tough crossing of the Andes. They restocked on forage and water before continuing their journey.
The architects of Tierra Atacama decided to incorporate the ancient adobe walls into the entrance of the hotel, preserving them as a monument to the history of the area.
Now Tierra Atacama is a boutique hotel on the edge of San Pedro de Atacama.
It was created by the Purcell family, long time owners and operators of the Ski Portillo, famous in Chile for its excellent skiing, food and warm hospitality. Like Portillo, Tierra Atacama provides guest experiences that combine outdoor adventure and sports with indoor comforts, hospitality and excellent service.
Tierra Atacama’s architecture, interior design and gardens were designed by some of Chile’s leading creative talent.
Hotel's team's objectives were to be as authentic as possible, using furniture and accessories handmade with local materials, while also creating a place that allows guests to relax, spoil themselves and enjoy the good-life in this magical part of the earth.
An ambiance in hotel is casual and friendly. Hotel’s team wants all guests to be comfortable in common areas just as if they were in their own homes.
Enjoy one of the welcoming private corners of the hotel such as a seat by one of the terrace fire pits, lounge next to the pool or relax on one of the shady outdoor decks. When night falls, take in the brilliant stars, bask in the peace and wonder that is the Atacama Desert.
In addition, there are guest computers available, WiFi throughout the hotel, a TV lounge, excursions area, board games and terraces with fire pits.
The hotel faces the majestic Licancabur Volcano and there are panoramic views throughout.
Poniente Rooms are slightly more spacious than Oriente Rooms, offering dramatic volcano views through large picture windows as well as views of the Salt Mountain range from the terrace.
They feature a private terrace with outdoor shower overlooking
the Salt Mountain Range and the hotel gardens. Poniente Rooms offer views of the Licancabur Volcano through large windows.
These rooms can be set up with two twin beds or one king bed.
The intimate Oriente Rooms are awash with nude and cocoa tones, with large canopy beds facing wide, sliding glass doors and the Licancabur Volcano views which lie beyond. Step outside onto your own private terrace and take in Atacama’s most famous peak, breathtaking by both day and night.
Meanwhile, sleek, en suite bathrooms are clad in cool slate and frosted glass; you can even choose between interconnecting indoor and outdoor showers.
If you’re looking for a family-friendly hotel in San Pedro de Atacama, these expansive Family Rooms are the answer. Accommodating up to six people, the Family Rooms are sprawled over two levels, with two twin rooms downstairs and a master bedroom upstairs, each featuring their own en suite bathroom.
Throughout the Family Rooms you´ll find the same local touches and sophisticated feel of the Oriente and Poniente options, with an earthy color palette matching the ever-present scenery, to be admired from the privacy of your large terrace.
Tierra´s chef creates wonderful meals using healthy, fresh ingredients of the area, such as quinoa, Andean potatoes and fresh herbs. Hotel's chef sources the best beef and Chilean lamb, the freshest fish and seafood, the best of the seasonal fruits and vegetables, including from hoyel's own garden. Chile is a great country for food with its long Pacific Ocean coast and its many excellent climatic zones for agriculture.
Menus feature traditional Chilean and Andean dishes, which tend to be light and healthy. Hotel's chef also offers vegetarian dishes, as well as international cuisine. There will always be options for each of the three courses so you can pick the dish that best fits your taste.
A typical starter would be a traditional Chilean crab filled pastry or a grilled pear salad with camembert and caramelized walnuts. This would be followed by a choice of tender ostrich filet with cabernet sauce and a side of thyme and sage fettuccini or grilled salmon with tomato gnocchi and a light pesto sauce.
Vegetarians could opt for a delicious lasagne or a sesame rice noodle and vegetable dish. For dessert, a traditional southern crumb kutchen with cabernet sauvignon ice cream or a light fruit salad.
The dining experience at Tierra Atacama takes advantage of local produce, filling the menu with innovative twists on north Chilean cuisine. With the potential for warm days and the hotel’s high-altitude location, the expert chefs create dishes that are light and tasty, not heavy or overwhelming. This approach complements the local traditions with fresh, colorful salads, Peruvian corn, quinoa and a range of appetizing meat or vegetarian mains.
Every day the focus is firmly fixed on using innovative techniques and a modern approach to both the flavor and presentation of the dishes, while also staying true to regional recipes and seasonal ingredients.
When it’s time for a drink, whether it’s one of the many delectable teas, craft beer or the signature Rica Rica Sour cocktail, we have it covered. Ask one of the restaurant staff for a taster board of select
cheeses and handmade empanadas, or maybe a slice of sweet kuchen cake – a Chilean favorite – to accompany your freshly brewed coffee or perfectly chilled glass of Chilean wine.
The restaurant itself is also a reflection of the balanced approach taken to the food. Here, floor-to-ceiling windows on all sides allow daylight to stream in and guests to gaze across the beauty of the desert, the perfect complement to any meal.
With soft white drapes and raw stone walls separating the space, the restaurant feels like a continual extension of the surrounding landscape.
