CHOBE NATIONAL PARK
Located in Botswana’s north eastern district, the Chobe National Park is an essential destination whilst visiting Botswana. Proclaimed in 1968, and covering an area of 11 700 km², the park was named after the incredible Chobe River, which forms its northern border.
Less than 100km from Victoria Falls and flanked by the Moremi Game Reserve and Okavango Delta in the south west, Chobe National Park is the perfect location for visitors looking for frequent wildlife encounters and generous sightings of some of Africa’s most spectacular game animals.
The most notable, and frequently visited area within the park is the Chobe Riverfront.
Closest to the town, Kasane, the riverfront is where a multitude of wildlife congregate during the dry winter months.
The most exceptional of these is the massive Kalahari elephants, which the park is famous for. With a population of around 70000, the Chobe has one of the highest concentrations of elephants in Africa.
During the dry season, it is commonplace to observe over 1000 elephants on the floodplains at any one time. Needless to say, a game drive along the riverfront is more often than not complete with several sightings of these majestic creatures.
A game drive of this nature, also provides the chance to witness buffalo, waterbuck, Kudu, giraffe, sable, impala and baboons in their natural habitat. If you’re lucky, you might just catch a glimpse of two of Africa’s largest predators: lion and leopard.
Another popular activity in the Chobe National Park is a leisurely boat cruise along the Chobe River. Drifting along the river upon a comfortable river boat is the ideal vantage point from which to witness the many animals which make their way down to drink from the river, seeking sustenance from its waters.
Hippos and crocodiles are also common sightings on these cruises, and elephants frequently cross the river to the islands where lush green grass is available year-round.
Housing over 450 species of birds, the adjoining Chobe National Park is one of Africa’s finest birding safari locations.
The Chobe River teems with fish. The abundance of game fish provides fishermen and women with the opportunity to try their hand at tackling the infamous Tiger Fish, or anticipating the bite of the timid tilapia.
